چکیده

The statistical mechanics of N cold dark matter (CDM) particles interacting via a softened gravitational potential is reviewed in the microcanonical ensemble and mean-field limit. A phase diagram for the system is computed as a function of the total energy E and gravitational softening length ǫ. For softened systems, two stable phases exist: a collapsed phase, whose radial density profile ρ(r) is a central Dirac cusp, and an extended phase, for which ρ(r) has a central core and ρ(r) ∼ r at large r. It is shown that many N -body simulations of CDM haloes in the literature inadvertently sample the collapsed phase only, even though this phase is unstable when there is zero softening. Consequently, there is no immediate reason to expect agreement between simulated and observed profiles unless the gravitational potential is appreciably softened in nature. How to Simulate the Universe in a Box? Testing Modified Gravity with a N-body Simulation Code

In this paper we present preliminary results from cosmological simulations of modified gravity in the dark matter sector. Our results show improvements over standard cold dark matter cosmology. The abundance of low-mass haloes in the modified gravity model fit observations better than the conventional theory, while the differences of the modified density fluctuation power spectrum differs from ...

The Universal Mass Accretion History of CDM Haloes

We use the extended Press-Schechter formalism to investigate the rate at which cold dark matter haloes accrete mass. We discuss the shortcomings of previous methods that have been used to compute the mass accretion histories of dark matter haloes, and present an improved method based on the N -branch merger tree algorithm of Somerville & Kolatt. We show that this method no longer suffers from i...

PINOCCHIO and the hierarchical build-up of dark matter haloes

We study the ability of PINOCCHIO (PINpointing Orbit-Crossing Collapsed HIerarchical Objects) to predict the merging histories of dark matter (DM) haloes, comparing the PINOCCHIO predictions with the results of two large N-body simulations run from the same set of initial conditions. We focus our attention on quantities most relevant to galaxy formation and large-scale structure studies. PINOCC...

Dark Matter Caustics and the Enhancement of Self-annihilation Flux

Cold dark matter haloes are populated by caustics, which are yet to be resolved in N-body simulations or observed in the Universe. Secondary infall model provides a paradigm for the study of caustics in typical haloes assuming that they have had no major mergers and have grown only by smooth accretion. This is a particular characteristic of the smallest dark matter haloes of about 10−5 M⊙, whic...

Predicting the Number, Spatial Distribution and Merging History of Dark Matter Haloes

We present a new algorithm (PINOCCHIO, PINpointing Orbit-Crossing Collapsed HIerarchical objects) to predict accurately the formation and evolution of individual dark matter haloes in a given realization of an initial linear density field. Compared with the halo population formed in a large (360 particles) collisionless simulation of a CDM universe, our method is able to predict to better than ...
